Ito et al. (2010)

Ito, Mizuko, Baumer, Sonja, Bittanti, Matteo, boyd, danah, Cody, Rachel, Herr-Stephenson, Becky, … Tripp, Lisa. (2010). Hanging out, messing around, and geeking out : kids living and learning with new media

This is the report of a study conducted over three years. What is meant by the term ethnographic? Note the two key questions (p. 2):

How are new media being taken up by youth practices and agendas? And how do these practices change the dynamics of youth-adult negotiations over literacy, learning, and authoritative knowledge?

This is also a study of things that happen outside schools. Why?

Do the findings of this research speak to your particular interests? Which ones? How?

Mimi (Mizuko) Ito is another name in the digital culture space that is worth noting, as is danah boyd

This is a book. No you don't need to read it all! Read the introduction to get a sense of the scope. Then get a sense of what each chapter/section is concerned with and read the bits of interest. There is a growing number of studies of this type but the work of Ito and her colleagues sets a useful baseline.
