Interactive Whiteboards: the powerful tool revolutionising the classroom

This resource is intended for the English as Second language (ESL) teachers. The purpose of the resource is to convince the ESL teachers to use interactive whiteboard (IWB) in their classrooms. This resource highlights the features and use of the IWB and its practical application in the work space.

The ESL students are highly motivated to learn yet, they face a lot of obstacles while settling in our country given they have minimal knowledge of the primary mode of communication – English. Traore & Kyei-Blankson (2011) stated that technology and the digital devices can be used to motivate and engage the ESL students in the development of literacy and language skills. IWBs are efficient digital teaching devices that can be used with the whole class at one time, whereas the other digital devices such as computers or I pads require one-on-one support for the ESL learners due to the language barrier. It has been observed that the ESL teachers avoid using IWB as they are heavily reliant on print-based materials. Duivenvoorden study (as cited in Koenraad, 2008) stated that it might be due to teacher’s lack of confidence or the lack of IWB skills. Not only this, they strongly believed that IWB doesn’t help the kids in any way and to them it seems like a waste of time.

The professional resource is originally paper based but it has been used for presentation purposes as well. I presented my resource to some of my colleagues in a couple of meetings and I also handed out the resource to the other teachers to explore and trial. The presentation starts with a You Tube video depicting some of the students utilising the different activities prepared by the teachers. The teacher and the student also provide their views about the IWB. I shared my personal experiences and provided first hand experiences and outlined numerous benefits of this powerful digital technology. The teachers were also provided with additional information on how IWB help improve teaching by Bayne (2007). The audience was encouraged to create their own activities and share with colleagues. As teachers were utilising their time creating interesting activities an ideas was proposed to collate all these activities at a particular storage space so it could become accessible to all the other teachers. As a result of this feedback, an Ed studio was established where teachers could continue sharing their activities.
