Via Cathy Davidson's blog: Sheryl Grant and Kristan Shawgo have put together a scholarly, annotated bibliography of 160 or so separate articles, studies, and op ed pieces on badges, representing the full spectrum of views.

They have also curated another resource of blogs and other articles on badges.

An excellent post by Scott Leslie on badges. It is somewhat technical and has links back to original working papers on badges from Mozilla.
