Assignment One

In my experience, giving students the opportunity to learn through ‘acting’ or being active within the language is the most effective way of keeping them engaged. Breaking up solid blocks of writing or reading with short discussions allows students to relate to one another and also to practice spoken English. The aspects of digital technology to be included are email, online short response tasks and social networking/peer-to-peer collaborative workspaces designed to engage students. In my experience, ESL teachers are limited by their schools curriculum as to what they are allowed to do to ‘satisfy students needs’. In one particular program in which I am an assistant teacher, there is little creative ability given to the teacher as the needs of the students are pre-determined by a test given to them before they start the program, and there are many students all of varying levels of English experience in the one classroom.

While there are a lot of resources for independent ESL learning (student- based), there are very few resources specifically for teachers to use which incorporate activities that can be merged in to a school/teaching facility’s strict curriculum. Many of the teachers I have spoken to were quite restricted in what types of technology they used with students and the capacity that the students were allowed to use it to.
