Chris' public learning, week 9

I've learned a lot this past week. The first assignments came in. Apart from trying to nudge folk along the how to conform to writing academic essays path which can be painful for both me and them but still a necessary part of the apprenticeship notion of doing a Masters, I was pleased to see really interesting and innovative ideas around the problem spaces chosen. I think a number of the pieces would be publishable in a formal journal.

I now have a better sense, I think, of the style, the way different students think from what they have written. As I have found in the past, the folk who still lack a bit of confidence try to write to some mythic view they have of what an academic exercise looks like. I think some academics still suffer from that pre-occupation. Helen Sword's book1 is a timely reminder of these silly hang ups.
